HMS FAQ

"Can I buy props from you?"

Yes! If you have your own design you want produced, we will be glad to give you a quote.

We make custom props by request for motion picture, television, theatre, and other productions, as well as for retail sale; along with prototype products for toy manufacturers and others. We also offer molding, casting, and vacu-forming services if you need an existing part or prop reproduced.

As a general policy, HMS cannot make Star Trek or other studio-copyrighted props for sale direct to the general public, and this includes "do it yourself" parts and graphics proprietary to HMS and our contractors that are used to make them; such products can only be sold through authorized licensors.

"But I really want a phaser or tricorder..."

The Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton carries a line of authentic props, masks and makeup appliances, and other items in their "Admiral's Collection" gift shop that while they were not "used in production," they are made using the same molds and techniques, and by the same people, as those used on Star Trek; and they come with Paramount's Certificate of Authenticity. In many cases, an autographed picture of the actor most associated with the prop is included.

Roddenberry.com carries a full line of reasonably priced, high quality, and authentic "build it yourself" kits of the more popular props featured in the Star Trek franchise, which are made by various manufacturers.

Master Replicas offers very high quality models and props from many different movies and shows including Star Trek, which includes the currently available Original Series USS Enterprise.

At present, these are most of the legitimate ways the public can buy authentic licensed Star Trek props and prop kits that we're aware of.

"Do you rent props?"

HMS can rent out props, and custom build rental props; but we are not a rental house in the traditional sense as we do not keep a wide variety of stock on hand.

There are several well-established prop rental houses in the Los Angeles region which can help with your rental needs, you're welcome to contact us and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction if we can't help you ourselves.

"How long does it take to make the props I see on your web site?"

It depends on the production schedule, the propmaster involved, and other variables. For Star Trek Voyager, we were usually given a week [5 working days and if necessary the weekend] to design and/or build a given prop.

As examples, the Artificial Intelligence Bomb ["Warhead"] and the 29th Century tricorder ["Relativity"] were each designed and created -- the external shape and details including the locations for the lights, sourced for parts and electronics, machined and built, graphics created, and finished in one week.

"Any job openings?"

HMS is not currently hiring.

While that may change in the future, you generally have to live in the Los Angeles area to get a job at any shop here. Sometimes we may need help on large projects from time to time, but we usually draw upon the services of experienced friends and aquaintances who can come to the shop on short notice.

We welcome resumes and portfolios from those interested in getting into the industry, or those already in the industry; please send them to the address on the contact page... you never know!
